Abstract

In conversation with Gabriele Werner-Felmayer, the social anthropologist and gender researcher Veronika Siegl (Vienna) provides insight into her postdoctoral project, in which she examines issues of inequality and self-determination in reproductive medicine. Siegl explains how the controversial practice of commercial surrogacy can be understood as a form of "ethical labor." The conversation is based on Siegl's 2023 published monograph Intimate Strangers (Cornell UP).
